My 14 year old gets a sip of wine now and then... some he likes and some he doesn't. Oops... did I just raise a red flag for child protective services? : O

I did some significant research on the subject a couple of years back... turns out that children who are introduced to alcohol in the home, by family members, as part of social mealtimes, are far less likely to develop alcohol problems later in life. A primary point being that alcohol use is not condemned, but abuse of it is.

Unlike in the US, the only European country I could find that actually has a minimum age for a child to be served alcohol in the home is England... and that minimum age is 6. :)

OMG 6yrs old... Now thats a bit too young... Now while I do not condemn alcohol I think 6 is much too young to drink alcohol. A taste maybe but no my daughter will not be toasting in the New Year with us with a glass of champagne.... But as she gets older.... I would rather her feel safe to drink w/us than have to sneak around and drink behind our backs.

And what's great about a free country (or would be) is that you as a parent can make that decision about your child's activities without some government bureaucrat wanting to take your children away because they disagree with how you raise them. :)

I remember reading an article when doing my research, in which a major medical society was noting how "disturbing" it was that "a significant number of teenage drinkers receive their first alcohol from their parents." In my opinion that's exactly who should be giving it to them!

One reason why drinking is such a problem on college campuses is that these kids go from (ostensibly) being under their parents control, to being essentially free agents, and they have sudden access to alcohol without having been taught how to drink responsibly. Unfortunately, the solution on most college campuses is to ban alcohol altogether, which just keeps it underground and at off-campus parties, compounding the problem.

Right.....so they can marry, make babies, and all that, but without the marriage part they can't get a Coors or something?

Not just the Christian right; the left supports prohibition in its own way as well.. that's why it's continued to last so long.

Then you have the shift in focus of groups like MADD -- who have gone from combatting drunken driving, to fighting pretty much any public drinking at all. They fully support policies such as DC had for a while, where even 0.01% BAC on a breath test would land you in jail.

absolutely Bishop. Extremists on either side screw it up for the rest of us, one way or another.

I was going to make bumper stickers once for "DAMM!"... "Drunks Against Meddling Mothers".... but changed my mind. I thought getting death threats from some irate Mother wouldn't be a good thing.

The moralists are always doing that. I suspect that we might still have prohibition going on if the government hadn't figured out that it could tax the stuff and make a ton of money.
